Suzanna Guzman, mezzo-soprano
Internationally renowned mezzo soprano Suzanna Guzmán, mezzo-soprano has performed as a soloist and with the Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, Dallas Opera, and was one of the original Associate Artists of the Los Angeles Opera appearing in leading roles since 1986. An advocate of arts for inner city students, Ms. Guzman has performed her one woman show, Don’t be Afraid: It’s Just Opera! For over 200,000 children across the country. She is principal soloist on the Grammy-nominated CD, Carlos Chávez: Volume III. She was honored by People Magazine as an outstanding Latino in Music; and was the first recipient of the Plácido Domingo Award for Arts and Service. May 2010 she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music from Occidental College, serves on the USC Thornton School of Music Board of Councilors, UCLA’s Design for Sharing and she is an active member of the Music Center Education Divisions Artists Roster. Dr. Suz was honored as the 2011 Maverick Award winner with the Los Angeles Women in Theatre Festival and has been named the 2011 Mexican American Opportunity Foundations National Woman of the Year. 2011 also marks the 10 year anniversary in the title role of Latina Theatre’s Dios Inantzin: la Virgen de Tepeyac. But most important she is the bursting with pride mom of a University of Michigan freshman. Go blue!
