Brahms

requiem

When Johannes Brahms completed his arrangement of Ein Deutsches Requiem for choir and two pianists, he wrote to his publisher: “I have devoted myself to a noble occupation: arranging my immortal work so that it can also be enjoyed by four-handed souls. Now it cannot perish. What is more, it has become altogether splendid.”

The Pasadena Master Chorale agrees wholeheartedly with Brahms’ assessment of this version of the Requiem. “Ein Deutsches Requiem has become one of the most popular choral works in the repertoire and with good reason,” says Artistic Director Jeffrey Bernstein. “It is an incredibly emotional work, and the choir sings throughout – carrying the audience by turns through great sorrow, anger, redemption, joy and healing.”

On April 9, PMC will present Brahms’ four-handed arrangement of the Requiem in its entirety. Joining the choir are soprano Krystle Casey and baritone Scott Graff, accompanied by pianists Shawn Kirchner and Alan Steinberger.
